Apaay and her Fish
This design has a special story behind it. Years ago, I came across the work of artist Dorothy Francis on a trip to Ottawa. Her drawings of children from the Alaskan bush stayed with me for decades—so much so that, 40 years later, they inspired this block.
Aapay and Her Fish shows a quiet winter moment: a bundled-up child pulling a little sled, fish in hand, pausing to greet a friendly dog in the snowy landscape. In the distance, a cozy cabin sends smoke curling into the sky. It’s a peaceful scene that feels both personal and timeless. The landscape is brought to life with hand-dyed wool, charming stitching, and dimensional accents.
18” block. Whether displayed as a stand-alone piece or incorporated into a larger quilt, Aapay and Her Fish is a tribute to childhood, resilience, and the wonder of winter in the Alaskan wild.
